Auxiliary November 2024 Minutes
The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met November 5, 2024 at
6:30 PM with 5 officers and one member present. The meeting was
conducted by President Debbie Howell.
The Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag and the Preamble to the
American Legion Auxiliary were recited. We sang “My Country Tis Of
Thee”. The opening prayer was given by Unit 19 Chaplin Teresa Lyle.
The roll call of officers was given by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam. The
motion to accept the minutes as read was made by Judy Morton and
seconded by Beth McAdams and carried on the floor.
Finance: The finance report was given by Beth McAdams in Libby’s
absence. A motion to accept the report was made by Teresa Lyle,
seconded by Beth McAdams and it carried the floor.
VAVR – Beth McAdams reported that there will be a “Veterans Tribute” at
First Methodist Church.
Beth also reported that the VA Carnival turned out well. Libby, Beth, Jolene
and Gail Attended.
Children/Youth – No Report
Leadership – President Debbie Howell reported:
- Tris Ward, National ALA President will be at Post 82 on November
15th at 2:00 PM and members are encouraged to attend. - November 9: Vet to Vet will be at the Factory in Columbia at 1:00 PM.
20 to 25 quilts of valor will be presented. - November 11: Poppy Day at Kroger, James Campbell shopping
center. - November 11: The Columbia Elks Lodge will have a veterans
breakfast starting at 8:00 AM. - November 11: Veterans Day Parade in Columbia starting at 11:00 AM
in front of the Post Office and ending at the Mule House.
Gail reported on the Divisional Meeting.
Education – Chair Teresa Lyle reported American Education Week is in the
near future. There was a good discussion regarding taking cookies in
appreciation of the bus drivers garage as they do not get recognition. This
was the agreement of all present.
Membership – Chair Beth McAdams reported;
- “Show your Sparkle for Membership and be a Shinning Star”
- Unit 19’s goal for 2024-2025 is 137.
- The Department shows we have 82 paid members.
- Pat Wallace, Department Membership Chairman, stated that the Dept
of Tennessee is 3 rd in the Southern Division and 9 th nationally. - Beth reported that over 35 of the members on the roll started out as
Juniors and are now seniors and those paying are rethinking their
membership. We will not make 100% unless we get new members.
Debbie Howell and Beth McAdams visited Anita Jo Foster, Karen Burgess
and delivered 2025 ALA Membership cards on October 24th.
Gail and Beth visited Anita on October 25th and Anita expressed a desire to
receive cards. Address for Life Care is 841 James Campbell Blvd.
Columbia Room 127 A.
Beth has compiled a list of paid and unpaid members and has not received
any renewals via mail in the past week. She emailed those non-paid
members she has addresses for.
Girls State – Chair Beth received an email on 10/25/24 announcing 2025
session of ALA Volunteer Girls State will be at Lipscomb University May 25-
31, 2025. Citizen fee will be $500.00 per person. Registration will began
after the new year. Webinar on Tuesday, November 19 at 12:00 PM
eastern time. Beth has registered as the contact person for this year and
notified the contacts at each school of the dates.
Chaplain – Chair Teresa Lyle sent a sympathy card to Kim Gattis and family
and also a “Thinking of You” card to Breanna Bean and family because
Breanna’s son had surgery.
Bills for Presentation – None
Constitution and By-Laws – No Report
The Auxiliary Emergency Fund collected $8.00.
Large Pot: Marsha Robinson missed the drawing.
Chaplain Teresa Lyle gave the closing prayer.
The meeting was closed by President /Debbie Howell.
Next meeting will be December 3, 2024, with dinner at 6:00 PM and
meeting to follow.
