Unit 19 April 2025 Minutes

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met April 1, 2025 at 6:30 PM with 5 officers and 3 members present. The meeting was conducted by President  Debbie Howell.

 The Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag and the Preamble to the American Legion Auxiliary were recited. The opening prayer was given by Gail Gilliam.

The roll call of officers was given by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam.  The motion to accept the minutes as read was made by Beth McAdams and seconded by Charlotte Conners and carried on the floor.

Finance – Libby and Beth will do some checking on the report and approve next month.

Americanism – Teresa Lyle reported that she and Judy Morton delivered an American flag to Highland Park Elementary.  Teresa received 10 Americanism essays from 3 schools this year. The essays were from the 4th – 8th grades at Columbia Academy,  Spring Hill Campus, E.A. Cox and Mt. Pleasant elementary. These will be judged in the next two weeks. Charlotte approved providing certificates to the winners and Libby will provide the prize money.

Leadership – A discussion was held about who would be attending the Spring Meeting on April 12th and who would attend the Convention. This matter will be decided next month.

Membership – Beth reported that as of  April 1,2025 there are 107 members that have renewed. The goal is 137.

Girls State – Interviewers were Charlotte Conners, Jolene Thompson and Debbie Howell. We have reviewed all schools except Central. Delegates are as follows:

Columbia Academy – Lillie Baker, Francie McDonald and Sarah Isenburg.

Culleoka – Lily Alred

Hampshire – Sophia Lawson (has not registered)

Mt. Pleasant – Kera Smithson, Olivia O’Neil, Kylie Wood (Alternate has been told she can go by state).

Santa Fe Unit School – Sophie Church ( has not registered)

Spring Hill High School –  Ashlynn Johnson, Brielle Weissman

Zion Academy – Carline Holden, Raigan Gardner (neither have registered)

3 alternates have registered. Have 15 spots – Central 2 are open – 1 Culleoka taken by Mt. Pleasant alternate.

Monetary Sponsors:

FOP Associates – $500

Breakfast Rotary – $500

Columbia Academy – $1,000

Total $6,000 which is 12 girls. ..need $7,500 to send 15 girls.

Bills for Presentation – None

Constitution and By-Laws – The committee met at 5pm on  March 4th and discussed the Standing Rules Preface, Officers, Membership, Meeting, Unit Files, Americanism and Chaplain. Motion to approve these modifications.

We also discussed Education but no modifications were written down. We were to review Girls State, Finance, Poppy and Veterans Affairs tonight but postponed this meeting until May because of Spring Break.

Poppy – Friday at Central High, Poppy table at Auctioneers contest.

The Auxiliary Emergency Fund collected $9.95.

Large Pot: June Beckham missed by not being present.

Closing Prayer – Gail gave the closing prayer

The meeting was closed by President Debbie Howell.

Next meeting will be may 6, 2025, with dinner at 6:00 PM and meeting to follow.
