Unit 19 October 2024 Minutes
The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met October 1, 2024 at 6:30
PM with 5 officers present. The meeting was conducted by President Debbie Howell.
The Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag and the Preamble to the American Legion Auxiliary were recited. We did not sing. The opening prayer was given by Unit 19 Chaplin Teresa Lyle.
The roll call of officers was given by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam. The motion to accept the minutes as read was made by Beth McAdams and seconded by Libby Moss and carried on the floor.
Finance: The finance report was given by Unit 19 Treasurer Libby Moss. A motion to accept the report was made by Teresa Lyle, seconded by Beth McAdams and it carried the floor.
Libby asked which members would be attending the Middle TN Division Meeting in Whitehouse on October 12th. Libby, Jolene, Charlotte and Gail will be attending. Times were discussed.
VAVR – Chair Libby reported info regarding the York Hospital Carnival.
Libby needs help purchasing prizes. She, Jolene and Debbie will do the
shopping. Members attending the carnival will be Libby, Beth, Jolene and
Gail. We will meet in the back parking lot of Columbia Pediatric Building at
7:00 AM and ride to Murfreesboro. Rain check day will be October 25th.
National President Trisha Ward will be at Post 82 from 11:00 AM until 2:00
PM on November 15th.
Libby announced that she will be sending out these donations soon:
- Christmas for Veterans at York $200.00
- Christmas for Veterans at Nashville $100.00
- Christmas for Veterans Mountain Home $50.00
- Christmas for Veterans Memphis $50.00
- Comfort Warriors $100.00
- Fisher House (York) $200.00
All of these donations will of course come from the Veterans Fund.
Children/Youth – Chair Teresa reported that her flag program for Spring Hill and Columbia Academy will be postponed until January possibly February.
President Debbie Howell shared with the Unit about Ron Malugen having a yard sale in Hampshire and Mt. Pleasant October 11 from 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM and October 12 from 7:00 AM until 4:00 PM. All proceeds will go toward the County backpack program. This kind person mows yards on the
weekends and donates his profits to the backpack program. Libby Moss moved that the Unit donate $100.00 to his project and it was seconded by Beth McAdams and carried the floor.
Leadership – President Debbie Howell announced the Mid Winter
Conference will be at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro January 11th and 12th.
Membership – Chair Beth McAdams reported;
- “Show your Sparkle for Membership and be a Shinning Star”
- Unit 19’s goal for 2024-2025 is 137.
- The Department shows we have 27 paid members. Renewal notices
have been mailed. Beth has 3 that have renewed as of October 1 st - At the District meeting the best dressed Barbie will get a prize.
- Pat Wallace, Department Membership Chairman, reminded membership that new applications need to have a Legion officer sign the application. These need to be very legible. She also said not to hold membership.
- Next month Beth will report who has not paid and members can help
by calling them.
Girls State – Chair Beth reported Audrey Owens who spoke at our August
meeting has been named Homecoming Queen at Zion Christian Academy.
These girls should be eligible to go to Girls State in 2025: (I am waiting until
they pay the 2025 dues and then I will contact them)

Chaplain – Chair Teresa Lyle and President Debbie Howell draped the Unit
19 Charter with black to honor these deceased members:
- Nancy Scott
- Ella Sanders
- Clara Wells
- Mamie Burgess
- Dorothe Horne
- Catherine Bolton
- Susan Keene
- Bonnie Alderson
- Nancy Coghlan
- Edna Lentz
This was performed in a dignified manner.
The Auxiliary Emergency Fund collected $9.00.
Chaplain Teresa Lyle gave the closing prayer.
The meeting was closed by President /Debbie Howell.
Next meeting will be November 5 , 2024, with dinner at 6:00 PM and meeting to follow.
