Auxiliary Minutes September 2021

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met September 7, 2021 at 6:00 PM with 5 officers and 0 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Connors and the prayer was given by member Gail Gilliam in the absence of Chaplain Julia Pettus. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited by all members. We did not sing but President Charlotte brought the lyrics to the first verse of the “Star Spangled Banner” and the meaning of each line as it was inspired by Frances Scott Key. President Charlotte asked Libby Moss to recite this for the members. A copy of this presentation will be included with the minutes.

The Program for the month was Music and Gold Star. The music part of the program was accomplished by Charlotte and Libby’s presentation of verse 1 of the “Star Spangled Banner” as noted above. For Gold Star President Charlotte introduced discussion regarding the Unit’s Gold Star members and how we can honor them. Membership Chairman reported the Unit had only 6 Gold Star members at this time. After discussion it was decided that cards would be sent. President Charlotte volunteered to take care of this and she also will send cards to our Shut-ins as well. Thank you Charlotte!!!

The Program for next month will be Education and District Meetings.

The minutes prepared by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam were approved as they appear on the Legion 19 web site. Edie Owston made the motion to accept the minutes, Joanne Ring seconded the motion and it was carried on the floor. Paper copies were made and given to those members who do not own computers.

The Financial Report was prepared by Unit 19 Treasurer Libby Moss. Gail Gilliam made the motion to accept her report, Edie Owston seconded the motion and it carried on the floor. Paper copies were given to members.

 Bills for Presentation:  There was I bill for presentation: President Charlotte sent a $100.00 check to the Department of Tennessee (ALA) for Unit 19 to be incorporated. This was mandatory so there was no need to vote for approval.


Americanism:  President Charlotte reported Riverside Elementary School had requested 20 grave size American flags to display for 9-11 and this request was granted.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund: $3.85 was collected. Chairman Jane Norton was not present.

Cavalcade of Memories:  Nothing reported.

Chaplain: Chairman Julia Pettus has decided that she no longer wants to be Unit 19 Chaplin. The Unit members are very sorry to hear of Julia’s decision. Julia you are very missed.

Gail Gilliam reported that Post 19 Eddie Rogers gave Unit 19 his phone number: 931-477-5410, for Grief Support. His card is on the credenza if anyone should need his help.

Children and Youth: Nothing reported.

Community Service: Joanne Ring reported there will be a Sunset Symphony to honor the First Responders of Maury County for 9-11. Members were encouraged to attend.

Harvest Share suggested bringing: tuna and tuna helper, pasta and pasta sauces, romaine noodles and rice and dried pinto beans.

Gail Gilliam reported on the programs that Harvest Share services for Columbia: 1) provide 180 back packs a month to elementary schools that are not helped by churches, etc. 2) every 2nd Thursday from 11:00-12:00 is Senior Day (68+) 3) every 4th Thursday from 11:30-12:30 is Medical Day ( those with a serious long term illness). There are stipulations for these programs. Please call Donna at 931-446-6100 for assistance.

 Constitution and By-Laws: Nothing reported.

Education: President Charlotte asked if our Unit wanted to participate in the 10 for 10 this year. It was decided that there would be school supplies and personal supplies purchased for elementary and middle school students. Treasurer Libby Moss made the motion to donate $200.00 for this endeavor, Gail Gilliam seconded the motion and it passed on the floor. Joanne Ring volunteered to do the shopping for the Unit. Thanks Jo!!!

Girls State:  Nothing reported.

Gold Star: Gail Gilliam just reminded everyone the Gold Star Highway Dedication has been rescheduled to take place on October 6, at 3:30 PM at the Maury County Courthouse Square and encouraged members to attend.

Junior Activities: Nothing reported.

Leadership: President Charlotte reported: 1) At the Mid-Winter Convention the Girls State Nation Citizen from Chattanooga will be attending. And Jenise, the new GS Chairman will probably present the program which will be very good. 2) The Department Headquarters will be celebrating 100 years in November. 3) She thanked all those members who attended the Leadership Meeting.

Legislation:  Chairman Gail Gilliam had 3 items to report: 1) National Legislative Council serves to build closer ties to Congress. 2) Senate committee votes to repeal Iraq War authorizations. 3) Congress passes emergency funding that includes money for the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa Program.

National Security: Nothing reported

Membership:  Chairman Libby Moss reported the Unit is approximately 20-25 % with dues paid. Chair Libby reported she had paid Gold Star and Shut-In members’ dues and reported PUFL members to get credit.

Chair Libby reported the Unit goal is now 167 members.

Chair Libby also reported she taken care of all the bank business for Unit 19 to get Barbara McAdams’ name off and Joanne Ring’s name on the checking, etc. accounts. Thanks Libby for taking care of this.

Past Presidents Parley: Nothing reported

Poppy: President Charlotte asked the Unit if we wanted to do a Poppy Drive for Veterans Day. After discussion it was decided that the current Poppy Chairman needed to be present to make that call.

Public Relations: Nothing reported.

VA&R: President Charlotte brought up discussion regarding providing lunch for the Veterans on Veterans Day. We decided to make that decision at the October meeting.

VA&R Chairman Libby Moss reported that she and member Joyce Johnson will be presenting 6 QOV at the Breakfast Rotary Club meeting and 15 at East Side Church of Christ. Thank you so much Libby and Joyce. This is just wonderful of you dear ladies. Unit 19 is so proud of you!!!

New Business: District 7th President Libby Moss reported she has contacted all of her Units. Libby has a problem with driving at night (as many of us) and cannot do this for Units that meet at night and are so far away. But she has come up with a great idea to solve this problem. She suggested to her Units that are so far away, to meet for lunch at a designated place that would be half way. Thank you Libby for being creative and working this out to get your business as District 7th President taken care of.

The small pot was won by Gail Gilliam, $1.00 and donated to the General Fund.

The large pot was won by Laura Parks, not present and next month it will be $45.00.

Gail Gilliam, in the absence of Chaplin Julia Pettus, gave the Prayer for Peace. President Charlotte Connors adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be held October 5, 2021 at 6:00 PM.
