Auxiliary Minutes October,2021

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met October 5, 2021 at 6:00 PM with 5 officers and 2 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Connors and the prayer was given by member Gail Gilliam as Unit 19 has no Chaplin at present time. Gail read from the Auxiliary Magazine, the October Reflections. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited by all members. We sang “This Land is Your Land”.

The Program for the month was Education and District Meetings. There was nothing presented for Education, but President Charlotte reported the District Meeting information for all members to note. The Programs for next month will be: Membership, Veterans Day, Past Presidents Parlay and District Meetings.

The minutes prepared by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam were approved as they appear on the Legion 19 web site. Edie Owston made the motion to accept the minutes, Debbie Howell seconded the motion and it was carried on the floor. Paper copies were made and given to those members who do not own computers.

The Financial Report was prepared by Unit 19 Treasurer Libby Moss. Gail Gilliam made the motion to accept her report, Debbie Howell seconded the motion and it carried on the floor. Paper copies were given to members.

 Bills for Presentation:  There was 1 bill for presentation: Joanne Ring presented a bill for $118.14 for the school supplies she purchased for 10 for 10. Debbie Howell made the motion to reimburse Joanne and Gail Gilliam seconded the motion and it carried on the floor.

Reports:

Americanism: Nothing was reported.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund: $ 9.00 was collected. Chairman Jane Norton was not present.

Cavalcade of Memories:  Nothing reported.

Chaplain: Nothing was reported and no one in Unit 19 has stepped up to be Chaplin.

Children and Youth: Nothing reported.

Community Service: Gail Gilliam announce that citizens of Maury County are encouraged to “Pitch in and Pick up” liter the month of October.

Joanne Ring, Libby Moss and Libby’s sister-in-law Linda Derryberry attended the Sunset Symphony honoring Maury County First Responders. 

Harvest Share suggested bringing: tuna and tuna helper, pasta and pasta sauces, romaine noodles, rice and dried pinto beans.

Gail Gilliam reported on the programs that Harvest Share services for Columbia: 1) provide 180 back packs a month to elementary schools that are not helped by churches, etc. 2) every 2nd Thursday from 11:00-12:00 is Senior Day (68+) 3) every 4th Thursday from 11:30-12:30 is Medical Day ( those with a serious long term illness). There are stipulations for these programs. Please call Donna at 931-446-6100 for assistance.

 Constitution and By-Laws: President Charlotte reported that a new copy of Unit 19 By-Laws will be read at a meeting in the near future.

Education: Joanne Ring reported she had bought school supplies for the Unit’s participation in the 10 for 10 School Program. Thanks Joanne!!!

Finance:  Nothing reported.

Girls State:  Nothing reported.

Gold Star: Gail Gilliam just reminded everyone the Gold Star Highway Dedication has been rescheduled to take place on October 6, at 3:30 PM at the Maury County Courthouse Square and encouraged members to attend.

President Charlotte sent out cards for Unit 19 Gold Star and Shut-In members. Thank you Charlotte!!!

Leadership: President Charlotte reported on the upcoming District Meetings.

Legislation:  Chairman Gail Gilliam had 3 items to report: 1) New presumptive conditions for Gulf War and post-911 veterans exposed to particulate matter. 2) Legion to testify on economic well-being and security of veterans. 3) Close the Post-9/11 GI Bill loophole, Legion tells Congress.

Poppy: President Charlotte asked the Unit if we wanted to do a Poppy Drive for Veterans Day. After discussion it was decided that the current Poppy Chairman needed to be present to make that call. The Poppy Chairman was not present at the October meeting as well.

Public Relations: Nothing reported.

VA&R: VA&R Chairman Libby Moss made the motion to donate monies to: ALA Department for $400.00 for Veterans Christmas; Comfort Warriors, $100.00; Veterans Creative Arts, $100.00; Children of Warriors $100.00; Fisher House $200.00;  up to $1000.00 for Unit 19 to spend on the Veterans at York Hospital for clothing and fruit ( President Charlotte will shop and Unit 19 members will help with the sorting for the gift bags as they did last year). Debbie Howell seconded Libby’s motion and it carried on the floor.

Debbie Howell offered to buy 100 Christmas cards for the Veterans. Thank you Debbie!!!

Joanne and Libby reported they will be presenting 6 Quilts of Valor at the Breakfast Rotary Club on November 5. Libby will present 16 QOV at South Gate Church on November 7. Way to go ladies!!!

Libby Moss made the motion to donate $100.00 to “Shooting for the Stars” sponsored by the Columbia Breakfast Rotary Club. This is a fund raiser for Veterans and their children and will take place at the Maury County Gun Club on November 6th. Debbie Howell seconded Libby’s motion and it carried on the floor.

The small pot was won by Edie Owston $16.00 and donated to the Veterans Fund.

The large pot was won by Zoe Dennis, not present and next month it will be $55.00.

Gail Gilliam, in the absence of a Unit 19 Chaplin, gave the Prayer for Peace. President Charlotte Connors adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be held November 2, 2021 at 6:00 PM. At the time of these minutes being compiled, dinner at the Post is uncertain.
