Auxiliary Minutes November 2021

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met November 2, 2021 at 6:00 PM with 5 officers and no other members present. The meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Connors and the prayer was given by member Gail Gilliam as Unit 19 has no Chaplin at present time. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited by all members. We did not sing.

The Program for the month was Membership, Veterans Day, and Past Presidents Parley. The Membership report and the Veterans Day reports were presented by Chairman Libby Moss and are printed in their respected places of the minutes. For the Past Presidents Parley part of the Program, President Charlotte read the Past Presidents’ Preamble for the members. The Programs for next month will be Veterans Affair and Rehabilitation, Christmas for the Veterans and concerns for the needy families.

The Unit 19 Charter was draped in a very dignified and solemn manner for long time member Jane Norton. Jane will be very much missed as she spent much time in the service of Veterans and their families. Unit 19 is very saddened by her passing. President Charlotte and Gail Gilliam presented a short memorial at Jane’s funeral and members placed poppies in her casket.

The minutes prepared by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam were approved as they appear on the Legion 19 web site. Edie Owston made the motion to accept the minutes, Joanne Ring seconded the motion and it was carried on the floor. Paper copies were made and given to those members who do not own computers.

The Financial Report was prepared by Unit 19 Treasurer Libby Moss. Gail Gilliam made the motion to accept her report, Joanne Ring seconded the motion and it carried on the floor. Paper copies were given to members.

 Bills for Presentation:  There were no bills for presentation.


Americanism: Nothing was reported.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund: $ 2.00 was collected.

Cavalcade of Memories:  Nothing reported.

Chaplain: Nothing was reported and no one in Unit 19 has stepped up to be Chaplin.

Children and Youth: Nothing reported.

Community Service: Nothing reported.

Harvest Share suggested bringing: tuna and tuna helper, pasta and pasta sauces, romaine noodles, rice and dried pinto beans.

Gail Gilliam reported on the programs that Harvest Share services for Columbia: 1) provide 180 back packs a month to elementary schools that are not helped by churches, etc. 2) every 2nd Thursday from 11:00-12:00 is Senior Day (68+) 3) every 4th Thursday from 11:30-12:30 is Medical Day ( those with a serious long term illness). There are stipulations for these programs. Please call Donna at 931-446-6100 for assistance.

Girls State:  Chairman Joanne Ring reported that this year 14 girls from Unit 19 may attend. The fee is $500.00 each and the dates are May 29 –June 4.

Gold Star: Gail Gilliam just reminded everyone the Gold Star Plaque Dedication has been rescheduled to take place on November 11 at 3:30 PM at the Maury County Courthouse Square and encouraged members to attend.

Leadership: President Charlotte reported on the upcoming Mid-Winter Convention is January 8th and 9th, 2022.

Legislation:  Chairman Gail Gilliam had 3 items to report: 1) American Legion supports key Legislation impacting Veterans: a) H.R. 2819: Solid Start Act of 2021. b) H.R.4575: Veteran Peer Specialist Act of 2021.  c)  H.R. 4794: Making Advances in Mammography and Medical Options (MAMMO) for Veterans Act. 2) A victory for LGBTQ+ Veterans discharged under ‘Don’t’ Ask Don’t Tell’ 3) A list of things to contact your Senators and Representatives re: a) Tell your Senators and Representatives to support Buddy Check Week! b) Call on Congress to save the Troops to Teachers program. c) Provide for Veterans Affected by Toxic Exposure. d) Open the VA to All WWII Veterans! e) Take Action: Demand the GI Bill for Reserve and National Guard. f) Share the American Legion’s Legislative Priorities with your Members of Congress!

National Security: Nothing reported

Membership:  Chairman Libby Moss reported 2/3 of Unit 19 membership have paid their dues. Unit 19 goal is 167.

Chairman Libby brought up discussion that Jane Norton did not, as accustomed, pay the dues for her daughters Pam and Lisa and granddaughter Grace. After good discussion, it was decided that Unit 19 would pay their dues for respect of Jane. Membership Chairman Libby made the motion, Joanne Ring seconded the motion and it carried on the floor.

Past Presidents Parley:  The reading of the PPP Preamble was read by President Charlotte.

Public Relations: Nothing reported.

VA&R: VA&R Chairman Libby Moss reported she would be presenting approximately 22 Quilts of Valor the following weekend. Yea Libby, way to go!!!

Libby also reported a Veterans’ Day Service would be held at the Memorial Building at 11-11 at 11:00 AM. There will be a dedication in honor of Post 19 Past Commander James Patterson, (Maury County Veterans’ Service Officer). A bust of James will be placed there in honor of his service to Veterans.

Joanne Ring reported “Shooting for the Stars” will be sponsored again this year by the Breakfast Rotary Club for Veterans and their Children on November 6 at 9:00 AM.

Joanne reminded the members of the “Living History” honoring Maury County Veterans at the Macedonia Community Center for the week of Veterans Day. (Set up will be on November 5th and the facility will be open to the public on the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th).

New Business:  Libby Moss made the motion that Unit 19 purchase plastic tubs to store memorabilia as Post 19 has sold the Hall building and will be moving to the Memorial Building. Joanne Ring seconded the motion and it carried on the floor.

The small pot was won by President Charlotte Connors $1.25 and donated to the Auxiliary Emergency Fund.

The large pot was won by Cindy Ray, not present and next month it will be $65.00.

Gail Gilliam, in the absence of a Unit 19 Chaplin, gave the Prayer for Peace. President Charlotte Connors adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be held December 2, 2021 at 6:00 PM. There was discussion regarding having a dinner for Post 19 members for Christmas. Libby volunteered to speak with Connie Green about catering and Joanne volunteered to speak with her friend that ran Chick-Fil-A about providing dinner. At the time of these minutes the outcome is uncertain.
