Auxiliary Minutes June 2021

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met June 1, 2021 at 6:00 PM with 4 officers and 2 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Connors and the prayer was given by member Gail Gilliam in the absence of Chaplain Anne Szyszlo. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited by all members. We sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag” in honor of Flag Day on June 14.

The Program for the month was Girls State, Jr. Activities and Flag Day. There was no program presented but, the Unit was invited to go to the Post Hall and see Scott Cepicky present 2 proclamations: 1) George Horne, Jr. awarded for his faithful service to the American Legion Post 19 of 75 years. Wow what an achievement! And 2) Gail Gilliam was awarded for her ALA achievements throughout her tenure.   

The Program for July will be Independence Day.  

The minutes prepared by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam were approved as they appear on the Legion 19 web site. Jane Norton made the motion to accept the minutes, Edie Owston seconded the motion and it was carried on the floor. Paper copies were made and given to those members who do not own computers.

Unit 19 Treasurer Libby Moss was absent and therefore there was no report.

 Bills for Presentation: There were no bills for presentation

Reports:

Americanism:  Gail Gilliam reported that members of Unit 19 and Post 19 met on May 27 and placed a “Flags of Field” at Rose Hill Cemetery. Thursday June 3 will be the day to take up these flags.

Member Joanne Ring reported she handed out small American Flags to fellow coworkers and others that she was in contact during the weekend and at the Poppy Drive. Joanne also decorated the River Walk Pavilion with American Flags for Memorial Weekend.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund: $27.05 was collected by Chairman Jane Norton.

Chaplain: Nothing reported.

Gail Gilliam reported that Post 19 Eddie Rogers gave Unit 19 his phone number: 931-477-5410, for Grief Support. His card is on the credenza if anyone should need his help.

Children and Youth: Nothing was reported.

Community Service: Member Joanne Ring reported the Breakfast Rotary Club will celebrate July 4 Fourth with their traditional River Walk Patriotic Celebration. Joanne encouraged all to come. It is truly a special event.

Harvest Share suggested bringing: tuna and tuna helper, pasta and pasta sauces, romaine noodles and rice and dried pinto beans.

Gail Gilliam reported on the programs that Harvest Share services for Columbia: 1) provide 180 back packs a month to elementary schools that are not helped by churches, etc. 2) every 2nd Thursday from 11:00-12:00 is Senior Day (68+) 3) every 4th Thursday from 11:30-12:30 is Medical Day ( those with a serious long term illness). There are stipulations for these programs. Please call Donna at 931-446-6100 for assistance.

Girls State: President Charlotte reported the Girls State Programs started this week.

Leadership: President Charlotte reminded the Unit of the Convention this weekend. Gail and Edie will meet at the Post at 7:30 AM and ride to Cool Springs. Joanne will be going in her car and Mary and Charlotte will come with their husbands.

Past Presidents Parley: Nothing reported

Poppy: President Charlotte reported she, Joanne and former Unit 19 PQ, Charlotte were present for the Poppy Drive. Total Poppy Drive donations collected: Friday, $78.00, Saturday, $26.00, Steve Konz collected, 403.00. During the meeting: Jane Norton donated $20.00, Joanne Ring $10.00 and Gail Gilliam, $10.00.

Public Relations: Nothing reported.

VA&R: President Charlotte reported on July 24, Saturday the Unit will host a lunch with sandwiches, chips, cookies, etc. for American Legion Bicyclers stopping by the Post.

The small pot was won by Jane Norton, $3.05 and donated to the General Fund.

The large pot was missed by Marlene Adams, not present and next month it will be $100.00.

Mary Rogers, in the absence of Chaplin Anne Szyszlo, gave the Prayer for Peace. President Charlotte Connors adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be held July 6, 2021 at 6:00 PM, there will be no dinner prepared due to Covid.
