Auxiliary Minutes July 2024

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary Unit 19 met on July 2, 2024 at 6:00 PM with 6 officers and 3 members present.

The pledge of allegiance to the American flag and the American Legion Auxiliary Preamble were recited. We did not sing. The opening prayer was given by Unit 19 Chaplain Teresa Lyle.

The roll call of officers was given by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam. The minutes were prepared and presented on the Post 19 Web Site. Teresa Lyle made the motion to accept the minutes, the motion was seconded by Marsha Robinson and it carried on the floor.

The financial report was prepared by Treasurer Libby Moss. Beth McAdams made the motion to accept Libby’s report. Jolene Thrasher seconded the motion and it carried on the floor. Libby passed out copies.

$17.00 was collected for the Auxiliary Emergency Fund.

Membership – Beth McAdams reported that we have not received our goal for the year.  The theme for membership is “Show Your Sparkle for Membership and Be A Shining Star”.

I have 2025 membership cards with me tonight.  Senior dues are $40 and Junior dues are $10 (National is $5.00).  The unit keeps $5 of the senior dues and $6.75 of the junior dues.  You may renew tonight or you may go online and renew at www.    I have a draft of a letter that I want to include when sending membership cards to members.  Please review and let me know what modifications it should have before sending to PUFL, Gold Star and Shut In members.  These members along with those that pay tonight will be sent on the first transmittal.  I have a few copies of the membership list tonight.

Girls State – Beth McAdams reported that on June 11th Tori O’Neil 2023 Girls State Delegate and Beth McAdams attended the Fraternal Order of Police meeting.  Beth gave an overview of Girls State and Tori talked about her experience.  The FOP voted to give the unit $500.  They wrote the check on the spot and I took the check to Libby Moss.  She had the check from Kiwanis Club and therefore I took both checks to deposit in the bank the next day.  Jolene Thompson member of FOP and FOPA (Associates) texted later that same night that the Associates voted to give the unit $200 for Girls State.  Joanne Ring received $500 from the Breakfast Rotary Club for Girls State.  Judy Morton is working with the Elks Lodge to see if they will give a donation as well.  If any of these organizations want to have a Girl Stater to come to a meeting and talk when school starts it will be much easier to contact the delegates from 2024.  The unit received 3rd place at department convention for large division.  Thank you to Charlotte for writing the report.

Constitution and By-Laws: Beth McAdams reported that the unit received 2nd place at department convention for large division.

Children and Youth: Chairman Teresa Lyle reported that she delivered 5 boxes of cereal to Harvest Share this month. This will be collected through August.

Leadership: Chairman President Debbie Howell reported that the leadership meeting will be held Saturday August 3rd at Donaldson Post 88. Lunch will be $10.00. Unit 19 will bring a $10.00 door prize and several Unit 19 members are planning to attend.

Correspondence:  Secretary Gail Gilliam reported two thank you cards: (1) Columbia Central Jr ROTC $100.00 donation and (2) USO $100.00 donation.

For the Good of the Unit:

  1. Beth McAdams brought 4th of July kisses for everyone. Thank you Beth.

  2. Jolene Thrasher contacted Columbia’s 2 Kroger stores to get permission to have Poppy Drives at 9:00 AM on Veterans Day.

  3. Unit 19 QOV ladies, Libby Moss and Teresa Lyle will have quilt presentations November 9th.

Large Pot: Nickie Hickman’s name was drawn. She missed by not being present. The pot will be $100.00 next month.

The closing prayer was given by Unit 19 Chaplain Teresa Lyle.

The meeting was closed by President Debbie Howell.

The next meeting will be August 6th , 2024 at 6:30 with a catered meal at 6:00 PM.

Respectfully Submitted:

For God and Country.

Gail Gilliam, Unit 19 Secretary.
