Auxiliary Minutes January 2022

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met January 4, 2022 at 6:00 PM with 4 officers and 1 member present. The meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Connors and the prayer was given by member Gail Gilliam as Unit 19 has no Chaplin at present time. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited by all members. We did not sing.

The Program for the month was Legislation and National Security. There was no Program presented at this time. Next month the Program will be Americanism, Essay Contest, Scholarships and The Chapel of 4 Chaplains.

The minutes prepared by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam were approved as they appear on the Legion 19 web site. Marsha Robinson made the motion to accept the minutes, Joanne Ring seconded the motion and it was carried on the floor. Paper copies were made and given to those members who do not own computers.

The Financial Report and Bills for Presentation were postponed until next month’s meeting as Tresurer Libby Moss was absent.


Americanism: Nothing was reported.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund: Edie Owston collected $6.00.

Cavalcade of Memories:  Nothing reported.

Chaplain: Nothing was reported and no one in Unit 19 has stepped up to be Chaplin.

Children and Youth: Nothing reported.

Community Service: Nothing reported.

Harvest Share suggested bringing: tuna and tuna helper, pasta and pasta sauces, romaine noodles, rice and dried pinto beans.

Gail Gilliam reported on the programs that Harvest Share services for Columbia: 1) provide 180 back packs a month to elementary schools that are not helped by churches, etc. 2) every 2nd Thursday from 11:00-12:00 is Senior Day (68+) 3) every 4th Thursday from 11:30-12:30 is Medical Day ( those with a serious long term illness). There are stipulations for these programs. Please call Donna at 931-446-6100 for assistance.

Girls State:   Chairman Joanne Ring reported the opening registration for VGS is in January. Joanne will be sending out letters for sponsors.  Chair Joanne informed the Unit that she may have to step down from her VGS Chairmanship in May.    

Gold Star: Debbie Howell was so kind as to volunteer to send Christmas Cards to Unit 19 Gold Star ladies. Thank you Debbie!!!

Junior Activities: Nothing reported.

Leadership: President Charlotte thanked everyone who helped with the VA Christmas bags. Charlotte also thanked Debbie Howell for sending Christmas cards to our Veterans and Gold Star Families.

Legislation:  Chairman Gail Gilliam had 3 items to report: 1) An urgent request from John Kamin ( legion .org/legislative)  to contact Representatives and Congressmen to please support H.R. 5562 ( WWII Veterans Hospital and Medical Eligibility Act), to exempt WWII Veterans from the means test needed to receive VA healthcare services and also S. 1040. This needs to be signed into law ASAP according to Mr. Kamin. 2) Chair Gail forwarded this information to Congressman Scott DesJarlais and Senator Marsha Blackburn. And both were kind enough to respond with their interest in these issues.

Poppy:  Nothing reported.

Public Relations: Nothing reported.

VA&R: Chairman Libby Moss was absent but member Marsha Robinson reported the Veteran Display at Macedonia was excellent. Also there was good discussion that Fairview Park might be a good place for Veterans to meet and fellowship.

New Business:  Correspondence: 1) All members will be vacating the Post Hall in May. 2) The VFW is generously providing climate controlled storage for Post 19 and Unit 19. On January 15 packing will begin. 3) President Charlotte will send out emails for help with packing. 4) The Veteran Service Office has asked for help before next Christmas for volunteers to determine who genuinely needs food baskets. 5) The March meeting will be held at the Memorial Building. 6) March is the American Legion Birthday, heads up.

Small Pot: Won by: Gail Gilliam and donated to AEF, $2.15.

Large Pot: Won by Teresa McClure, absent, next month the pot will be $85.00

Gail Gilliam, in the absence of a Unit 19 Chaplin, gave the Prayer for Peace. President Charlotte Connors adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be held February 8, 2022 at 6:00 PM.
