Auxiliary July, 2021 Minutes

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met July 6, 2021 at 6:00 PM with 5 officers and 2 members and Joyce Johnson, Unit 19 member who has not been present for some years were present. Joyce, so glad to have you back with us and hope you will continue to attend our meetings. The meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Connors and the prayer was given by member Gail Gilliam in the absence of Chaplain Julia Pettus. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited by all members. Members sang ”America”.

The Program for the month was Independence Day. There was no program presented but member Joanne Ring who is also a member of the Breakfast Rotary Club reported on the annual 4th of July Celebration at the River Walk in Columbia: 1) It was a huge success, many attended. 2) 150+ children on bikes took part in the parade. 3) Joanne pasted out 100+ small American Flags. Way to go Joanne!!!

The Program for August is Leadership as well as Membership.

The minutes prepared by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam were approved as they appear on the Legion 19 web site. Joanne Ring made the motion to accept the minutes, Mary Rodgers seconded the motion and it was carried on the floor. Paper copies were made and given to those members who do not own computers.

The Financial Report was prepared by Unit 19 Treasurer Libby Moss. Gail Gilliam made the motion to accept her report, Joanne Ring seconded the motion and it carried on the floor. Paper copies were given to members.

 Bills for Presentation:  There was one bill for presentation: Gail Gilliam made the motion to pay President Charlotte $29.99 for the Chinese Auction at Conference, Edie Owston seconded the motion and it passed on the floor.

Reports:

Americanism:  Joanne Ring gave her report on the 4th of July Celebration during the Program part of the meeting.

After some discussion, it was decided that members would meet at Post 19 on Wednesday July 28 to clean grave flags and store them for next year. Several members volunteered to come and help.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund: $9.00 was collected. Chairman Jane Norton was not present.

Cavalcade of Memories:  Nothing reported.

Chaplain: Nothing reported.

Gail Gilliam reported that Post 19 Eddie Rogers gave Unit 19 his phone number: 931-477-5410, for Grief Support. His card is on the credenza if anyone should need his help.

Children and Youth: Nothing was reported.

Community Service: There was no report but as reported earlier: Harvest Share suggested bringing: tuna and tuna helper, pasta and pasta sauces, romaine noodles and rice and dried pinto beans.

Gail Gilliam reported on the programs that Harvest Share services for Columbia: 1) provide 180 back packs a month to elementary schools that are not helped by churches, etc. 2) every 2nd Thursday from 11:00-12:00 is Senior Day (68+) 3) every 4th Thursday from 11:30-12:30 is Medical Day ( those with a serious long term illness). There are stipulations for these programs. Please call Donna at 931-446-6100 for assistance.

Finance:  Area Legion Riders from Loretta will be stopping by Post19 on Saturday July 24 for snacks provided by Unit 19. They requested: bologna/cheese sandwiches, chips, pretzels and popcorn. Beer and soft drinks will be sold in the club.

Girls State: President Charlotte reported as VGS Chairman Julia Wells is stepping down from her Chairmanship that she had chosen Jenise Gordon to fill her position. Charlotte reported the Department Executive Committee approved.

Julia is working with different colleges to provide grants for the VGS program.

Treasurer Libby reported Unit 19 had received a $700.00 donation for Unit 19 VGS Program.

Junior Activities: Nothing reported.

Leadership: President Charlotte reported: 1) Charlotte presented Membership Chairman a trophy from the Department for the Unit 19 having 100% membership. Way to go Libby!!! 2) Unit 19 received the Unit of the Year plaque. 3) Melinda Hackney is the 2021-2022 Department President. 4) Unit 19 member Libby Moss volunteered to take the 7th District President again this year 2021-2022).  Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam will prepare the endorsement letter for Libby to be sent to Department. 5) The Mid-Winter Conference will be January 8&9 in Murfreesboro. 6) The Leadership Meeting will be at Post 88 on August 7. Members will leave the Post at 7:30 AM. Lunch will be: Salad, Baked Potato Bar, Dessert, Tea and Coffee for $10.00. Also each Unit will bring a $10.00 door prize. Kathy Leedy will be the Chairman of this meeting.

Legislation:  Chairman Gail Gilliam reported: 1) In the July “American Legion Magazine” on page 38 a list of Selected Resolutions of the Spring Meetings for Americanism, Employment & Education, Internal Affairs, National Security and VA&R. These resolutions were read to the Unit and a copy is included in these minutes. The full text of these resolutions are reported in the Digital Archive: archive.legion.org 2) In the May “American Legion Magazine” on page 8, Commander’s Message, S. 535 and H.R. 1115 introducing Legislation to build a memorial to be located on the National Mall to honor heroic veterans of our new longest war. A copy of this legislation will appear with these minutes. 3) Called attention to a great article in the July/August “Elks Magazine” on pages 22-27 “The Stars and Stripes, The Birth and Evolution of the US Flag”. Chairman Gail offered to loan the article to members. A copy will also be included with minutes.

Poppy: President Charlotte reported that she would try to get Unit 19 Poppy Queen to attend the Wounded Warrior Event at Post 19 on July 11 and the Legion Riders Event at Post 19 on July 24 as well.

Joanne Ring reported that she had collected $100.00 on Saturday at the 4th of July Celebration. Way to go Joanne!!!

Public Relations: Nothing reported.

VA&R: President Charlotte reported on July 11, Saturday at Post 19 there will be an event for the Wounded Warriors and as well on July 24, Saturday the Unit will host a lunch with sandwiches, chips, cookies, etc. for American Legion Bicyclers stopping by the Post.

VA&R Chairman Libby Moss reported she had presented a QOV quilt to Jim Thomas, a WWII Navy Veteran. Way to go Libby!!!

New Business: Nothing reported

Correspondence: Nothing was reported.

Old Business: Treasurer Libby Moss reported she had gone to the bank to remove Barbara McAdams name from the banking account for Unit 19 but she wasn’t able to do without this appearing in the minutes. Secretary Gail Gilliam will prepare the minutes and give Libby a hard copy so she can complete this transaction. Also Joanne Ring’s name will be added to Libby’s as signer. 

The small pot was won by Edie Owston, $1.50 and donated to the Child Welfare.

The large pot was won by Gail Gilliam and next month it will be $25.00.

Mary Rogers, in the absence of Chaplin Julia Pettus, gave the Prayer for Peace. President Charlotte Connors adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be held August 3, 2021 at 6:00 PM, there will be  dinner prepared by Eddie and Mary Rodgers.

August 2021 Newsletter

Our next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 3rd immediately following the meal at 6:00 p.m.

 
Eddie Roger won the small jackpot of $38.00.

By not being present at the meeting, Ronald Bailey missed out on the opportunity to win the big jackpot of $284.00, Congratulations to Charles Beckum for being present, he walked away with half the pot for $142.00.

Do not miss out on our next meeting.  Chaplain Eddie Rogers and his Wife Mary will be providing the meal prior to the August meeting.   Meals will be served at 6:00 pm for $5.00.  Meeting will immediately follow the meal.

Auxiliary May 2021 Minutes

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met May 4, 2021 at 6:00 PM with 5 officers, 2 members present. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited by all members. We sang “My County Tis of The” as suggested by Edie Owston.

The Program for the month was Poppy, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day.  

There was no program presented.  Next month the next program will be Girls State, Jr Activities and Flag Day.

Girls State: Chairman Joanne Ring reported Unit 19 Jr member Holly McAdams will be attending VGS.

Gail Gilliam reported speaking over the phone to Robert Long, with Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 815-5. Member Adam Andrews wants to donate $700.00 to Unit 19 GS.

Junior Activities: Nothing reported.

Leadership: President Charlotte reported: 1) Dot Faught is in a nursing home in Lawrenceburg. 2) Charlotte won the basket at the Zoom meeting. 3) Unit 19 Charlotte, Gail, JoAnne, Mary and Edie will be attending the Convention at the Marriott Hotel in Cool Springs. All members will meet at Post at 7:00 AM. 4) Post 19 Commander Terry Locke talked with Charlotte about Unit 19 cooking and serving lunch on Veterans Day. It was determined that Unit 19 could not to that. JoAnne volunteered to talk with Brenda Manning and Kay Bruce regarding catering. President Charlotte will contact Connie Green about catering. More discussion next month.

Legislation: Chairman Gail Gilliam had no report but she did say that the Department report is turned in and a copy is in the unit file.

National Security: Nothing reported

Poppy: JoAnne Ring asked the Unit if she could make her granddaughter an honorary Poppy Queen and this was approved. Poppy Queen Chelsea will help with Field of Flags as Rose Hill.

Public Relations: Nothing reported.

VA&R: Chairman Libby reported that she has 30 quilt of Valor applications. 8 QOV are to be given out soon. 3 QOV are finished and to be quilted. Chair Libby wants to get applications for a QOV to be presented at the Vet to Vet event.

JoAnna will be decorating the Riverwalk pavilion for the 4th of July.

April 2021 Legion Minutes

Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 met on April 6th, 2021. Commander Terry Locke called the meeting to order at 6:00. There were 30 members present.

Legionnaire Kim Smith offered the opening prayer.

READING OF THE MINUTES: Adjutant Metheny read the minutes from our March 2nd ,2021 meeting, and approved as read.  

FINANCIAL REPORT: Finance Officer Donny Walters submitted the financial report and it was made part of these minutes by attachment.

Veterans Services: Cory Cummings or Malachais Gaskins were not present

Cub Scout Report: Pam Minnehan reported that a Cross-over event took place and that all Scouts advanced.

HALL MANAGER: Diane Burgess reported the American Red Cross used the hall collecting 32 pints of blood.

MEMBERSHIP: Donny Walters gave the membership report.  Our new quota for 2021 is 515 members, 427 have paid.

We still need 88 and we stand at approximately 82%.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: George A. Horne Jr. was honored with his continuous membership of 75 Years of membership.

The Legion Riders will meet on Monday 4/12/2020 at 6:00 pm.

Seventh District Meeting – District Convention will be held Thursday April 15th beginning at 6:00pm at post 173 McMinnville. Baked spaghetti on the menu for $10.00.  A District Commander will be nominated and elected.

Chaplain Eddie Rogers asked for volunteers to serve on James Patterson Veterans Day committee.

Gail Gilliam from Post 19 Auxiliary announced they will be meeting at 6:00 pm on May 27th at Rose Hill Cemetery for anyone willing to participate in the Wall of Flags to honor the men and women who died in service to our country.

GOOD FOR THE LEGION:

Prior to the start of the meeting a $1000.00 check was presented to Post 19 from the Knights of Columbus, money was raised through fishing tournament.

Bob Stephenson stated that Post 19 ballcaps are available after the meeting for $21.00 each.

March 2021 Legion Minutes

Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 met on March 2nd, 2021. Commander Terry Locke called the meeting to order at 6:00. There were 32 members present.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Columbia Mule Day Auction will be held April 9th, 30 $20.00 items are still needed to fill our

obligation.  Chaplain Eddie Rogers suggested that a hat be passed around for those who have not brought anything could donate $20.00 at this time.  When the hat came back, the Legions obligation was fulfilled.

NEW BUSINESS: Donnie Walters reported that the American Legion Baseball has two teams registered and are ready to play.

Diane Burgess made two motions for the Post to donate $200.00 to the Special Olympics and the Gold Star Mothers, the motions were seconded and passed by members voting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Member of Post 19 were honored who have reached milestones in their continuous membership.

Present to receive their awards were:

Howard R. Fitzgerald – 50 Years of membership

                                                            Robert L Prentice – 50 Years of membership

Those not present but were recognized in their absences:

 Thomas H. Mcandless – 50 Years of membership

 Billy G. White – 60 Years of membership

The Legion Riders will meet on Monday at 6:00 pm.

Chaplain Eddie Rogers made himself available to teach anyone interested in learning how to organize an oratorical contest.
