Auxiliary May 2021 Minutes

The Herbert Griffin American Legion Auxiliary met May 4, 2021 at 6:00 PM with 5 officers, 2 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Connors and the prayer was given by member Gail Gilliam in the absence of Chaplain Anne Szyszlo. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited by all members. We sang “My County Tis of The” as suggested by Edie Owston.

The Program for the month was Poppy, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day.  

There was no program presented.  Next month the next program will be Girls State, Jr Activities and Flag Day.

The minutes prepared by Unit 19 Secretary Gail Gilliam were approved as they appear on the Legion 19 web site. Edie Owston made the motion to accept the minutes, Libby Moss seconded the motion and it was carried on the floor. Paper copies were made and given to those members who do not own computers.

Unit 19 Treasurer Libby Moss’ report was given in the form of a written copy and was given to each member. Gail Gilliam made the motion to accept the report, Edie Owston seconded the motion and it carried on the floor.

Bills for Presentation: There were no bills for presentation

Americanism:  Nothing was reported.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund: $5.00 was collected by Chairman Jane Norton.

Cavalcade of Memories:  Nothing reported.

Chaplain: Nothing reported.

Children and Youth: Nothing was reported.

Community Service: Nothing reported

Harvest Share suggested bringing: tuna and tuna helper, pasta and pasta sauces, romaine noodles and rice and dried pinto beans.

Gail Gilliam reported on the programs that Harvest Share services for Columbia: 1) provide 180 back packs a month to elementary schools that are not helped by churches, etc. 2) every 2nd Thursday from 11:00-12:00 is Senior Day (68+) 3) every 4th Thursday from 11:30-12:30 is Medical Day ( those with a serious long term illness). There are stipulations for these programs. Please call Donna at 931-446-6100 for assistance.

Finance: Nothing reported Treasurer Libby Moss brought up to the Department for office supplies. President Charlotte asked to table this until she did her research on the matter.

Girls State: Chairman Joanne Ring reported Unit 19 Jr member Holly McAdams will be attending VGS.

Gail Gilliam reported speaking over the phone to Robert Long, with Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 815-5. Member Adam Andrews wants to donate $700.00 to Unit 19 GS.

Gold Star: Nothing reported.

Junior Activities: Nothing reported.

Leadership: President Charlotte reported: 1) Dot Faught is in a nursing home in Lawrenceburg. 2) Charlotte won the basket at the Zoom meeting. 3) Unit 19 Charlotte, Gail, JoAnne, Mary and Edie will be attending the Convention at the Marriott Hotel in Cool Springs. All members will meet at Post at 7:00 AM. 4) Post 19 Commander Terry Locke talked with Charlotte about Unit 19 cooking and serving lunch on Veterans Day. It was determined that Unit 19 could not to that. JoAnne volunteered to talk with Brenda Manning and Kay Bruce regarding catering. President Charlotte will contact Connie Green about catering. More discussion next month.

Legislation: Chairman Gail Gilliam had no report but she did say that the Department report is turned in and a copy is in the unit file.

National Security: Nothing reported

Membership: Nothing was reported.

Past Presidents Parley: Nothing reported

Poppy: JoAnne Ring asked the Unit if she could make her granddaughter an honorary Poppy Queen and this was approved. Poppy Queen Chelsea will help with Field of Flags as Rose Hill.

Public Relations: Nothing reported.

VA&R: Chairman Libby reported that she has 30 quilt of Valor applications. 8 QOV are to be given out soon. 3 QOV are finished and to be quilted. Chair Libby wants to get applications for a QOV to be presented at the Vet to Vet event.

JoAnna will be decorating the Riverwalk pavilion for the 4th of July.

The small pot was won by Gail Gilliam, $3.65 and donated to the General Fund.

The large pot was missed by Debbie Howell, not present and next month it will be $100.00.

Mary Rogers gave the Prayer for Peace. President Charlotte Connors adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be held June 1, 2021 at 6:00 PM, there will be no dinner prepared due to Covid.

By not being present at the meeting, the ones who missed out on the opportunity to win the big jackpot was: Betty Chapman for $506.00 Kenneth Webb missed out on half the pot for $253.00, Betsy Davis, Jerry Collin, and Roy Cathey missed out on the quarter jackpot of $127.00 in winnings.

Our Membership: As of the April meeting our goal for 2020 membership is 515 members, 427 have paid. We still need 88 and stand at approximately 82%.


Comments: Please carry membership applications with you. Try to recruit at least one new member this
year. Tell your friends about Post 19, Squadron 19, and Auxiliary Unit 19, and last year we proudly added Chapter 19 of the American Legion Riders. Please encourage veterans and their eligible family members to join the Post 19 American Legion family.

Commander’s Message: A special thanks to everyone that attended the April’s meeting. In the best interest of the Post 19 Membership not to have a meal with the meetings for the foreseeable future. Due to no meals being served and daylight savings time we’ll start our meetings at 6:00 PM.

April 2021 Legion Minutes

Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 met on April 6th, 2021. Commander Terry Locke called the meeting to order at 6:00. There were 30 members present.

Legionnaire Kim Smith offered the opening prayer.

READING OF THE MINUTES: Adjutant Metheny read the minutes from our March 2nd ,2021 meeting, and approved as read.  

FINANCIAL REPORT: Finance Officer Donny Walters submitted the financial report and it was made part of these minutes by attachment.

Veterans Services: Cory Cummings or Malachais Gaskins were not present

Cub Scout Report: Pam Minnehan reported that a Cross-over event took place and that all Scouts advanced.

HALL MANAGER: Diane Burgess reported the American Red Cross used the hall collecting 32 pints of blood.

MEMBERSHIP: Donny Walters gave the membership report.  Our new quota for 2021 is 515 members, 427 have paid.

We still need 88 and we stand at approximately 82%.

Make sure you have paid your dues. They are $50.00 for 2021.

They can be paid either on-line, by mail, or here at the Post. Our new membership year began July 1st.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: George A. Horne Jr. was honored with his continuous membership of 75 Years of membership.

The Legion Riders will meet on Monday 4/12/2020 at 6:00 pm.

Seventh District Meeting – District Convention will be held Thursday April 15th beginning at 6:00pm at post 173 McMinnville. Baked spaghetti on the menu for $10.00.  A District Commander will be nominated and elected.

Chaplain Eddie Rogers asked for volunteers to serve on James Patterson Veterans Day committee.

Gail Gilliam from Post 19 Auxiliary announced they will be meeting at 6:00 pm on May 27th at Rose Hill Cemetery for anyone willing to participate in the Wall of Flags to honor the men and women who died in service to our country.

GOOD FOR THE LEGION:

Prior to the start of the meeting a $1000.00 check was presented to Post 19 from the Knights of Columbus, money was raised through fishing tournament.

Bob Stephenson stated that Post 19 ballcaps are available after the meeting for $21.00 each.

There being no further business, Commander Terry Locke adjourned the meeting at 6:50 pm.

March 2021 Legion Minutes

Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 met on March 2nd, 2021. Commander Terry Locke called the meeting to order at 6:00. There were 32 members present.

100% moving forward to the district race.  The district race will be held at EA Cox Middle School on March 6th.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Columbia Mule Day Auction will be held April 9th, 30 $20.00 items are still needed to fill our

obligation.  Chaplain Eddie Rogers suggested that a hat be passed around for those who have not brought anything could donate $20.00 at this time.  When the hat came back, the Legions obligation was fulfilled.

NEW BUSINESS: Donnie Walters reported that the American Legion Baseball has two teams registered and are ready to play.

Diane Burgess made two motions for the Post to donate $200.00 to the Special Olympics and the Gold Star Mothers, the motions were seconded and passed by members voting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Member of Post 19 were honored who have reached milestones in their continuous membership.

Present to receive their awards were:

Howard R. Fitzgerald – 50 Years of membership

                                                            Robert L Prentice – 50 Years of membership

Those not present but were recognized in their absences:

The Legion Riders will meet on Monday at 6:00 pm.

Chaplain Eddie Rogers made himself available to teach anyone interested in learning how to organize an oratorical contest.
